Hey! Oh my gosh I am so excited to write this blog post… I want to be completely honest this wasn’t something we saw coming, actually this was a spur of the moment decision that has become so beautiful and amazing and I am so excited about it. For anyone who doesn’t know about when we previously converted a school bus into a tiny home you can find all those blog posts HERE and a Youtube tour of that bus HERE. A little over a year ago we sold that first bus (someone in Hawaii actually bought it and had it shipped out). Since then we have lived in two apartments and now our aframe WHICH we are not getting rid of… I just feel like I need to say that up front the aframe is still our home and also the 5 acres it sits on happens to be the perfect place to park our new bus when we aren’t using it. To full understand why we decided to move back into the bus I need to give a little back story…..
So when we bought the aframe we knew that it meant Ben would be going down to Denver by himself during the work week and we would be staying at the cabin. We made that choice though because rather than spend money on a house we didn’t want (and couldn’t really afford) in the city we thought it made more sense to buy our dream home (that was actually in our price range) in the mountains. This all seemed fine at first but now five months in we are starting to see the strain of the weekly separation on the girls. Both girls have started to show pretty serious anxiety and just sadness when Ben leaves and it has reached a point that we don’t think it is healthy to continue living the way we are. (I should add they are fine when he is gone but the emotions and worry about him leaving have been really intense and don’t seem normal or healthy and we don’t want to continue living separate during the week and putting them through that.) We really love the cabin though and don’t want to give up that lifestyle so the solution that made the most sense was to find a home that could go with us to Denver during the work week and also provide a means for us to travel and go on road trips!
The initial plan was to get a trailer but after touring a million we decided they were really expensive and really poorly made. We actually bought a Casita camper (which we are now selling so if you are looking for one shoot me an email!) that worked great for Ben by himself but didn't really have enough space for all of us and our dogs and cat full time. (we debated keeping it to camp in but honestly this bus can probably take us everywhere we would have taken the Casita anyway!) Last week Ben was browsing the internet looking at campers for sale when we stumbled upon a bus. This bus was already converted, at a price point that was in our price range and actually the same price we sold our old bus for, AND it has the exact layout we have always said we would do if we could go back and covert a bus again. SO Sunday afternoon while we were sitting at a restaurant eating lunch Ben bought us a bus, and a plane ticket so he could go pick it up!
There are a few things we need to do to this bus to make it perfect… a tour of the inside will be coming just not today! We need to add a heat source, put in solar panels, I am redoing all the decorating inside to better fit our style, and eventually we will be putting in a wood floor BUT other than that it is move in read, and home! We wont be living in it full time (at least for now) but it will be our home away from the cabin during the work week and it is a means for us to be together which is really all that matters. Eventually our goal is to fix up the cabin and turn it into a vacation rental while we travel but to just be transparent we don’t have the money to fix everything we would need to fix on the cabin to do that right now and don’t want to rent it out until it is ready.
If you have any questions about the bus please, please ask! I will be slowly revealing the inside as we make it our own and hopefully documenting our travels. Neither of us felt complete after selling our last bus and I am hoping this is our chance to really live this dream out! We will be documenting this on youtube so if you want to see more of our awkward travel and my poor video editing skills lol please follow us on there! You can find a link to that HERE!
