I've been having a lot of fun using essential oils, you may have seen the post a while back on lavender that was so graciously guest blogged. Today we have another guest piece on oils by Morgan Somers who has provided some very useful tips on lemon, lavender, and peppermint some of my favorite oils!
“If we breathe the scent of goodly grass, the fragrance of spices, the aroma of good fruits, we pronounce a blessing over the pleasure.”
--Shmuel Yosef Agnon
Since as far back as we have records, we know that essential oils have been used to support health. They have always been an integral part of wellness and vitality. For a while, in many areas, we strayed from using them for health purposes and moved towards using them for their aromatic value. When oils are used aromatically, there is less need for quality, potency, and purity. In recent years, we are seeing a return to using essential oils for health and wellness purposes, and with that, there is a renewed need for pure, safe, effective oils. These oils smell light and fresh and joyful. They also offer incredible benefits to the health of the mind and body. I want to share some of my favorite uses for three of the most loved and used essential oils.
LAVENDER. Anciently, Egyptians and Romans used lavender oil for bathing, relaxation, cooking, and as perfume. It has wonderful chemistry (mostly linalool) that promotes calming of everything, from individual cells, to the mind and body as a whole. I love having it on hand to use with my kids whenever they need calming, whether it’s because they are experiencing BIG emotions that they can’t get a handle on, or because they fell off their bike and are feeling stressed and uncomfortable. It is wonderful for soothing the skin or supporting a good night’s sleep.
LEMON. Lemon is the freshest, brightest, happiest scent! I often use lemon in my homemade cleaners. Not only do I avoid bringing toxic chemicals into my home, but I also clean out the toxins that get tracked in through other means. It purifies my surfaces and the air in my home and makes things safe for little helpers to participate in the cleaning effort around the house! I also love putting a couple of drops in my glass or stainless steel water bottle for a refreshing boost and to help cleanse and purify the cells of my body. We live in a day and age where we are bombarded with lots of toxins and chemicals. They are in everything! Lemon helps to bring balance back and keep my body running smoothly. We also do a lot of camping which means tree sap. Lemon gets it right off! Same with gum in the hair or stickers on the dressers. Nothing sticky stands a chance against lemon oil!
PEPPERMINT. Mmmmmm, peppermint. This oil smells like delicious candy! Don’t be fooled though! Real peppermint essential oil tastes bitter! It is, however, wonderful for calming an angry tummy, soothing head tension, maintaining clear sinuses, and opening airways to support clear and easy breathing. It is very cooling, so I keep it in my kitchen in case I need it. My oven was having a minor malfunction and wasn’t venting properly. I would open the oven door with a hot pad in my hand and reach in and the steam…… OUCH! I would put some peppermint on there to cool it and lavender to calm it and all would be well in the world. It’s also great right now in the summer heat so we can play outside comfortably. I just put a couple drops in a spray bottle of water and spritz my kids backs. They love it! And they smell yummy too. I love this oil to help me focus and stay alert (especially useful when I’m driving late at night) and it is a blessing in the garden for keeping the insects away naturally.
Lavender + Lemon + Peppermint. This is a powerhouse combo for anyone who struggles with seasonal discomforts. If you feel like you just have to stay inside through all of spring when the world is blooming outside, this is the trio for you! Game over, pollen!! This is your all natural, non-drowsy trump card. LOVE! I will diffuse these three oils throughout my house, put a couple drops of each in a capsule and swallow it, and/or mix them together in a roller bottle and rub them on my neck and chest. Ahhhhh. Easy breathing!!
